This article is intended for system administrators.
Unlike the earlier versions of Windows, you can no longer Turn OFF or Defer Updates in the Home Edition of Windows 10. However, you can still Turn OFF Automatic Updates in Windows 10 using workarounds as listed below.
Why Turn Off Automatic Updates in Windows 10
Windows 10 installs updates in a two-step procedure, first the updates are downloaded to the computer and then Windows restarts the computer to complete installation of the update.
While Windows Pro users can defer updates, Windows 10 Home Edition users do not have the option to defer updates. This practically means that Updates are automatically downloaded to Windows 10 Home Edition Computers, as and when they become available.
Many Windows 10 users have reported about slowing down of computer, due to installation of updates in the background, just when they were in the middle of getting something important done on their computers.
Hence, we are providing below two different methods to Turn OFF Automatic Updates in Windows 10. You can make use of any method that you feel is easy and works on your computer.
Turn Off Automatic Updates Using Administrative Tools
The first method to Turn OFF Automatic Updates in Windows 10 requires you to sign into your Admin Account and access the Services screen.
1. Right-click on the Start button and then click on Run in the menu that appears.
2. On the Run Command Window, type services.msc and click on the OK button.
3. On the Services screen, right-click on Windows update and then click on the Properties option in the menu that appears.
4. On the Windows Update Properties screen, disable Windows Updates by selecting Disabled option for Startup Type (See image below).
5. Click on Apply button to save the changes that you just made to Windows Update Service.
The disadvantage of this method is it can prevent your computer from being up to date with Windows Updates. Hence, it is important that you remember to manually update your computer, whenever you have the time to do so.
1. Access the Services screen on your computer and turn on Windows Update Service.
2. Next, click on the Start button and then click on the Settings icon in the menu that appears (See image below)
3. On the Windows Settings screen, click on Update & Security option.
4. On the Update and Security screen, click on Windows Update option in the left pane and see if your device is up to date with Updates. If not, click on Check For Updates.
Note: You may see a message saying that “updates were stopped on your computer” or something similar. In such cases, you will have to click on Retry to download and install available updates on your computer.
In case your computer has missed multiple updates, you may have to click on Check for Updates multiple times, until your computer says that it is up to date with Updates.
After this you can go back and Disable Windows Update service, in case you want to Turn OFF Automatic Windows Updates on your computer.
Turn Off Automatic Updates By Setting Metered Connection
Some users have discovered that Windows 10 Updates are not downloaded to the computer, whenever the network connection is set as Metered Connection type in Windows 10.
Hence, you can Turn OFF Automatic Updates in Windows 10 by simply setting your current network as a metered network on your computer. Windows 10 will no longer install updates on your computer.
1. Click on the Windows Start button and then click on the Gear shaped Settings icon.
2. On the Settings screen, click on Network & Internet.
